It was the capital of the country from 1139 to 1256 and its university was founded in 1290. Today this impressive university is still one of the world's most illustrious and the city's biggest attraction. Surrounding it in the old town are fine old churches and narrow streets standing on a hill overlooking the Modego River.
Enjoy a private visit to the Old University. Enter through the "Porta Férrea", dating from the 17th century, and continue towards a courtyard known as "Pátio das Escolas". On the north side lies the buildings of the Old University, the east observatory, and the west the small university church.
Most impressive of all is the baroque style library, Biblioteca Joanina, one of the world’s most resplendent. However, it is not only this fact that makes it such an extraordinarily romantic place - which makes it one of the most romantic medieval towns in Europe are its incredibly picturesque cobbled streets lined with colorful houses full of geraniums and bougainvillea, Gothic doors and windows, whitewashed churches, pots and glazed tiles all surrounded by the walls of a 12th century castle.

In an accompanied visit, you can get to know the wine making technology and methods used in the Quinta to produce their elegant wines, learning every step of the wine process. After understand how the wines are produced, see for yourself how they are stored during the ageing process that gives them some of their most typical characteristic. After understand how the wines are produced, see for yourself how they are stored during the ageing process that gives them some of their most typical characteristic.
