Founded in 1889, as a tribute to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, great granddaughter and last direct descendant of King Kamehameha I, the museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts of natural and cultural history. Daily planetarium shows and craft demonstrations. Daily except Christmas, 9 am to 5 pm. Closed on Tuesdays. Admission.
Hawaii's most famous landmark acquired its nickname in 1820 when some British sailors thought they had found real diamonds on its slopes. The treasure turned out to be only worthless calcite crystals, but Diamond Head is still a "gem", especially for hiking fans. All you need to climb the 760 feet (0.7 miles) of inner crater walls is a pair of comfortable walking shoes, and a camera to record the stunning view from the rim! Admission fee required. Park gates are open daily, 6 am to 6 pm.
Located of Kalanianaole Highway. Protected as a state underwater park, the bay sits in the crater of an ancient volcano. Snorkelers can view thousands of exotic reef fish in their natural habitat. Closed on Tuesdays. Open from 6 am, closing times vary. Admission.
The 14-acre zoo specializes in tropical species and features exhibits built around tropical ecosystems. The "Elephant Encounter" show, and Petting Zoo are favorite attractions. Daily, 9 am to 4:30 pm, except Christmas day. Admission.
Located in downtown Honolulu, the national historic site of the only palace in the United States. King Kalakaua used it as his official residence until his death in 1891, and Queen Liliuokalani occupied the palace until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. The Royal Hawaiian Band performs free on most Fridays at noon. 45-minute guided tours conducted Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am to 2:15 pm, starting every 30 minutes. Advance reservations recommended. Admission.
The vast complex of grassy picnic areas, amphitheater, jogging courses, Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium was dedicated on June 11, 1877 as Hawaii's first public park.
